Traditional investing typically teaches you to buy and hold your investments. Ultimately, it’s kind of like the “buy and hold and pray” strategy because you hope at some point in time you’re going to have more money at the end of the day then you had when you started with.

Let’s face it, markets go up and markets come down and recently, the stock market has been pretty unstable. What happens to your portfolio when it’s sitting out there for the long turn going up and going down?

At the end of the day – like many people have experienced – you don’t have nearly as much you thought you might have and in some cases you may even have less.

Train2Invest teaches you how to work within in the markets… no matter what the economy doing. Doing this effectively comes back to making intelligent choices about how you put your money to work. If you can focus on good, solid, blue-chip companies, and if you can focus on reasonable time frames to make good decisions about investing and take small profits off the table, it doesn’t really matter what the market is doing.

Smart self-directed investors know that it’s not how often you’re making investment decisions, and it’s how good you’re making investment decisions that makes a big difference to your portfolio.

With the economic challenges of the last few years, many people have been concerned about their investments. Sadly, many have seen their investment portfolios disappear, and along with them, their chances of retirement.

In response, many people are pulling their hard earned money out of the stock market and opting for “safer” investment opportunities.

The problem is that what many would consider “very safe types of investments” are really just trading freedom for a false sense of security. The question that needs to be asked is “what is the rate of return?” GIC’s, Term Deposits and other “safe investments” usually have a rate of return somewhere around maybe 2% or 3%. If you consider the fact that inflation is somewhere around 2.5%, at the end of the day we are not really making any money… where is the safety in that?

With “guaranteed” investments we not might be losing money in stock market crashes, but at the same time we tragically miss the purpose of investing: creating the wealth that you as an individual and your family need to live without financial stress and to leave a legacy for your children.

The ability to self-direct, to take control of how you put your money to work, and actually make decisions where you can create small consistent profits, will pay you a lot more than the 2 or 3% or 7% that you would get on an institutional type of investment.

So if you think about it, if you can make 12% or 15% or 20% a year on your portfolio, how much faster is that going to meet the needs that you have as you grow towards retirement?

If you are considering a self-directed investment plan, you must understand the power of compound interest. To understand what compound interest means to you and to your investment portfolio, we will relate that back to something called the ‘Rule of 72’.

The Rule of 72 its real simple: whatever interest rate you’re making today divide that number into 72 and the answer is how many years it will take your money to double.

72 / Interest Rate = Years to Double Investment

So let’s say, you’re making 2% on that famous GIC. Well you take 2 into 72 that means 36 years from now your $10,000 will be $20,000.

72 / 2% = 36

Well that’s a long time to wait for double the money! Now perhaps you make about 6% on a mutual fund. You take 6 into 72 means your money is going to double every 12 years.

72 / 6% = 12

Well what if you could make 20% on your investment portfolio? If you take 20 into 72 you’re going to double your money every 3.6 years.

72 / 20% = 3.6 Years to Double your investment

Bottom line: your money is going to double much quicker if you can make a high rate of return.

How does the train2Invest Strategy work?

Train2invest is a really simple strategy that you can learn to put to action and that is; take small consistent profits on a repeated basis and what does that really mean? It means that when you put your money to work and you can make a little bit of a profit as a result of doing that, then when that comes back into your account, you have the ability to make those choices all over again.

Our whole philosophy centers around 1% returns within 2 week periods. The power of that means that not only can you accomplish pretty great things with your money but you compound that all over a period of one year and you do that on a consistent basis year over year no matter what the markets are doing and you have got a great rate of return. Somewhere in the neighbourhood of 20-30% on annual basis. All by doing 1% at a time.

When considering their financial investments, a lot of people will often ask themselves: should I work with a financial planner?

That may not be the right question to ask, though.

Perhaps a better question when considering your investment portfolio might be: “do you understand what your financial planner is doing for you?”

Understanding the impact of working with a financial planner is one of the main elements of financial literacy. This only comes with education.

The primary goal at Train2Invest.com is to give you the financial education you need so that you can look at what’s happening with your investment portfolio and then make intelligent choices.

A lot of times there is a significant amount of fees, other charges that go along with having a financial planner in the picture. By self directing, you might be able to eliminate all or at least most of those fees.

To find out if working with a financial planner is right for you, or for more information on self-directing your investments, download this free ebook: Stock Market Investing: The Untold Story

Why should I learn how to invest in the stock market?

You know when it comes to stock market investing in general, people are kind of afraid of getting involved in anything to do with that because they have got a lot of that stereotypical, “well you know there is a lot of risk involved and you are going to lose your money” and everything like that.

Well, the bottom line is that when you get educated on something no matter what it is, if you develop a skill set, you can accomplish more than you are able to before, in Train2invest our whole focus is in teaching you how to become a good self directed investor. That means we are going to take you through a course, we are going to teach you what to look at, we are going to teach you how to look at things, and we will teach you how to make a decision.

At the end of the day, you will have the confidence and the ability take your portfolio and put it to work in stock market and that’s a wonderful thing because when you are in control – as we said earlier – you will have the ability to make the decisions that you want, that fit you and your family.

Really simply, the biggest advantage is that you have the ability to when you’re in control of your money and your investment portfolio.

You have the ability to make the decisions that you are comfortable with, you are not replying on somebody else to make decisions that you might not even know what they are.

So when you are self directing and you say “I am going to take my money, I am gonna put it here and I am gonna make it work this way and when I have this profit I’ll be happy with it and if I don’t like what’s going on I can take it off the table” and it’s as simple as that.

One of the questions that I get asked a lot when I talk to people is this whole idea of self directed investing – what is it?

Well it’s actually quite simple. Self-directed investing is the ability for an individual to direct where, and how much, and when they put their money to work as an investment… without the hassle of a financial planner, stock broker, bank, etc.

It’s you actually going out and saying: “this is what I want to do with my money and this is what I am going to buy and when I am going to buy it.”

Basically, self-directing puts you in control.

The primary advantage of self directed investing is that you make the decisions and you are not relying on somebody else to make them for you.

A Tax-free savings account which was started up by the Canadian government in the beginning of 2009 to help you self direct your investment portfolio.

It is a great place to grow your money because when you put money into this account, any growth or profit is tax free when you take it out – that’s a wonderful thing.

Now, each year you can put 5000 dollars into this tax-free savings account. You can, your wife can, anybody over 18 can do that contribute to the investment vehicle. The benefit is that you grow that money and when you choose to withdraw it from the Tax-Free Savings Account, you don’t pay tax on it.

Why is that different from an RSP? Well, in most cases when you take out money from your RSP you are paying full tax on that amount because its income. On a Tax-free savings account, no tax on any profit.
